GLASGOW — The Prince and Princess of Wales, known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay while in Scotland, recently traveled to Glasgow with their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—to attend the netball semi-final match at the Hydro venue during the Commonwealth Games. The royal family’s visit coincided with the penultimate day of the multi-sport event, which also featured athletics, boxing, and judo competitions. The opening ceremony of the “Friendly Games” had earlier caught global attention when the King and Queen emerged from a TARDIS, reminiscent of the iconic London 2012 Olympic stunt featuring Queen Elizabeth II and James Bond actor Daniel Craig.
This year’s games in Glasgow represent a historic milestone following a drastic financial restructuring after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host in 2023 due to soaring costs. As a result, Glasgow stepped in to rescue the event—having previously hosted in 2014—staging the first-ever indoor opening ceremony as part of major scaled-back changes to ensure the continuation of the historic competition.
