LANSING — Michigan health authorities reported 10,773 cases linked to an ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak on Friday, marking an increase of 387 cases from the previous day. The intestinal infection, triggered by the Cyclospora parasite, has steadily climbed across the United States, resulting in 193 hospitalizations though no fatalities have been recorded. An ongoing investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has traced the multistate outbreak—affecting nine states—to iceberg lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms operations located in central Mexico, while health officials continue searching for additional vectors.

The outbreak has severely impacted consumer confidence and market demand, with shoppers cutting back on lettuce purchases amid growing food safety concerns. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recorded 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases since May 1, alongside over 11,500 suspected cases pending confirmation. Furthermore, analytics from Truveta reveal that July diagnosis rates soared to more than 11 times the eight-year historical average, sending over one in five patients to emergency departments and nearly one in eight to the hospital. Former CDC officials note that recent federal health budget cuts have further strained the government’s response capacity for foodborne illnesses.
