Prince William has given a rare personal update on Prince George’s school life, revealing that his eldest son has already begun spending nights away from home as he prepares for the next stage of his education.
The Prince of Wales made the comment during a live appearance on Heart Breakfast on May 22, 2026, while sending a message to his children, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. In the middle of the light-hearted family shout-out, William appeared to confirm that Prince George, 12, had boarded at school the previous night.
“Charlotte and Louis — because George is boarding last night — Charlotte, Louis, if you’re listening, make sure you’re on time, please,” William said, before joking that the younger two should avoid fighting over what to listen to in the car.
George currently attends Lambrook School in Berkshire alongside his siblings, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8. The school educates pupils up to Year 8 and offers flexible boarding options, meaning children can stay overnight at school without moving into full-time boarding immediately.
The detail has attracted attention because Prince George is expected to move on to secondary school soon, with royal watchers closely following where the future king may study next. Eton College, Prince William’s former school, has often been mentioned as a possible choice, especially after George was seen visiting the campus with William and Princess Kate in 2023. Marlborough College, where Kate studied, has also been widely discussed as another option.
William’s remarks also offered a more ordinary glimpse of family life behind palace walls. Asked about the school run, he admitted mornings can be “chaotic,” especially when music lessons, instruments, school bags and last-minute decisions are all involved. In another amusing moment, he said Prince Louis often leaves sticky fingerprints around the car after eating jam sandwiches.
For William and Kate, George’s next school will be a major family decision, not just a royal one. The couple have often tried to give their children as normal a childhood as possible, while also preparing George for the very public life ahead of him.
No official announcement has yet been made about Prince George’s secondary school. But William’s latest comment suggests the young prince is already being gently introduced to boarding life — one night at a time.
