Lahore – May 9: The Punjab Education Department has proposed increasing the minimum passing marks for matriculation and intermediate examinations from 33% to 40%, aiming to enhance academic standards and promote conceptual learning among students.

According to officials, if approved, the revised passing criteria will come into effect from the 2026 annual examination session. The current benchmark of 33% will remain applicable for the 2025 exam cycle.

The policy proposal, which targets both theory and practical components of subjects, seeks to reduce dependence on rote memorization and foster deeper understanding in students. In a bid to soften the psychological impact on students, the term “Fail” will be replaced with “Unsatisfactory” in result cards. Furthermore, a new grading system is also on the cards to align with modern assessment practices.

The final decision will be taken after consultation with the committee of chairpersons representing all nine educational boards across Punjab, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, DG Khan, and Sahiwal.

Teacher associations have welcomed the move, calling it a progressive step toward improving educational outcomes and ensuring students meet higher academic benchmarks.
