Rawalpindi — An 18-year-old bride, married just three months ago, died under suspicious circumstances allegedly involving abuse from her in-laws, police said. The woman, named Maheem, reportedly succumbed after being severely mistreated at her husband’s — and his family’s — hands.
According to Express News, the incident occurred in the jurisdiction of Thana Ratta Amral, Rawalpindi. The father of the deceased registered a case accusing the husband, Yasir, and his family of assault and murder.
The father, Nadeem Sardar, told authorities that Maheem and Yasir’s wedding was celebrated with great fanfare three months earlier. But barely a month later, her husband and his family began physically abusing her. He alleged that Yasir did not have a job and was demanding money from his daughter. When she refused, the mistreatment escalated.
Medical examination revealed, in addition to injuries from physical abuse, evidence of poisoning. On the morning of her death, after severe violence, Maheem fell extremely ill. Her husband allegedly took her to the District Headquarters Hospital and then fled.
The police have registered a case under charges of assault and murder, per the father’s complaint. An investigation is underway.
