KARACHI, : The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is scheduled to meet today to review the country’s benchmark interest rate amid inflationary pressures and uncertainty in the global economic environment.
At its previous meeting on September 14, 2026, the committee maintained the policy rate at 11.5 percent. Today’s meeting will assess inflation trends, economic activity, global oil prices, external account conditions and other key economic indicators before deciding whether to maintain, increase or reduce the rate.
According to a survey conducted by Topline Securities, 61 percent of market participants expected an increase in the policy rate, while 39 percent anticipated no change. Among those expecting an increase, 54 percent forecast a rise of 50 basis points and 7 percent expected a 100-basis-point increase. These figures represent market expectations rather than an official decision.
Why Is the Interest Rate Important?
The policy rate influences borrowing costs, business investment, consumer spending and economic activity. A reduction may make certain loans cheaper and encourage investment, while an increase can raise borrowing costs and help control inflationary pressures.
The final decision will depend on the committee’s assessment of economic conditions and inflation risks. The official announcement from the State Bank of Pakistan will confirm the new policy rate, if any change is made.
