Scientists Say Chewing Gum Can Quickly Detect the Presence of Flu Virus

Scientists have stated that chewing gum could serve as a rapid method to detect the presence of the flu virus. They added that chewing gum might potentially help prevent the transmission of the disease even before symptoms appear.

‎According to researchers, as the winter season approaches rapidly, many people are already suffering from colds, coughs, and fevers.

‎These symptoms could be caused by various seasonal illnesses, including flu, COVID-19, and rhinovirus commonly known as the common cold. Since their symptoms are quite similar, it becomes difficult to differentiate between respiratory infections caused by these viruses.

‎However, scientists now claim that a new test has been introduced that can help determine whether a person has the flu or not and this test is conducted using chewing gum.

‎The new test, which is a molecular sensor, is designed in such a way that when it comes into contact with the virus, it releases the scent of thyme (ajwain fragrance).

‎Researchers reported in ACS Central Science that they intend to incorporate this sensor into chewing gums or lozenges to enhance disease screening at the household level and prevent transmission before symptoms appear.

‎Professor Lorenz Meinel from the University of Würzburg in Germany, along with his colleagues from the Department of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, said they were attempting to address flaws in flu detection methods when they realized that the tongue could serve as an effective tool for identifying illness.
