Sindh Orders Immediate Closure of Schools in Unsafe Buildings

The Sindh government has introduced a zero-tolerance policy against private schools operating in dangerous and deteriorating buildings, prioritising the safety of students, teachers, and other staff members. The provincial Education Department has ordered the immediate suspension of educational activities in buildings declared hazardous or structurally unsafe.

Under the new directives, school administrations must immediately stop classes in unsafe premises and shift students to safe and suitable alternative locations. Authorities have warned that students, teachers, and other staff will not be allowed to remain inside buildings that pose a risk to their lives.

The Education Department has also directed officials to begin a comprehensive inspection of private school buildings within 15 days. During the inspection process, authorities will identify buildings that are dangerous, partially damaged, or structurally weak.

School associations have been instructed to ensure that private educational institutions comply with the prescribed building safety standards without delay. The authorities aim to identify potential hazards and prevent accidents that could put students and school staff at risk.

In addition, the government has decided to review the registration status of private schools operating in dilapidated buildings. Institutions found violating safety requirements may face legal action, including possible closure. Unregistered educational institutions will also be identified, and action will be taken against them in accordance with the law.

Officials have been directed to submit a detailed report within 15 days, covering inspection findings, the condition of school buildings, and the number of students affected by the safety measures.

The latest decision comes amid growing concerns about school building safety and the risks posed by poorly maintained structures. The provincial government has emphasised that protecting students and staff must remain the top priority and that educational activities cannot continue in buildings declared unsafe.

The measures are intended to strengthen monitoring of private schools across Sindh, improve compliance with building safety standards, and ensure that children can continue their education in secure environments.
