Karachi: Another deadly incident involving a speeding dumper truck claimed the life of a rickshaw driver and left several others injured, including the driver of a Hiace van, officials said on Saturday.
According to police, the fatal crash occurred on National Highway in Shah Latif Town when an overspeeding dumper rammed into a rickshaw, a Hiace van and a cabin shop, destroying all three. The rickshaw driver died on the spot while multiple passengers were injured.
The Traffic Police Road Accident Analysis Team, after inspecting the crash site, declared the dumper driver responsible, citing negligence and overspeeding as the primary causes. Authorities also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on the dumper owner, Sherzada, for operating the vehicle without a mandatory tracker. An e-challan was subsequently issued.
Shah Latif Town Police have registered a case under sections pertaining to qatl-bis-sabab and dangerous driving against both the driver, identified as Muhammad Hassan, and the owner of the vehicle. The FIR states that the inexperienced driver recklessly drove the dumper on Saturday morning, causing the deadly collision.
A statement from the Traffic Police spokesperson confirmed that dumper trucks and water tankers without trackers are now strictly banned from operating in Karachi. Only vehicles equipped with trackers—monitored directly by the traffic police—will be allowed on the roads.
The spokesperson added that despite repeated advisories, the dumper involved in the crash did not have a tracker installed. The fitness certificate of the vehicle was also not available at the time of inspection.
The report further states that the Hiace driver, Abdul Fatah, sustained serious injuries, while other injured individuals include cabin shopkeeper Ali Hassan Shah and four passengers from the rickshaw and Hiace.
