Tropical Storm Fengshen struck the southern tip of Luzon, Philippines, bringing intense rainfall, flooding, and storm surges that caused significant damage across the region. Although the storm’s sustained winds remain moderate, waves reaching up to two meters prompted the weather bureau, Pagasa, to warn of possible coastal flooding.
More than 27,000 residents from Albay province were evacuated to safer areas inland. Despite these measures, five people died when a tree collapsed onto a house near Pitogo on Sunday morning.
The storm follows a series of deadly earthquakes in Cebu and Mindanao that recently killed 87 people. Fengshen is expected to move across the Philippines before heading into the South China Sea, where it may strengthen slightly with winds up to 70 mph, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre.
Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon season has begun across South and Southeast Asia, bringing heavy rains to India’s east coast, where up to 150mm of rainfall is expected this week, raising further flood concerns.
