University of Peshawar Shuts 9 BS Departments Over Low Admissions

The University of Peshawar has announced the closure of nine Bachelor of Studies (BS) departments from the fall semester of 2025 due to extremely low student admissions.

According to official documents, the discontinued programmes include Development Studies, Geography, Geology, History, Social Anthropology, Statistics, Logistics and Supply Chain Analytics, Human Development and Family Studies, and Home Economics.

University rules require at least 15 students for a programme to continue. This year, several departments received fewer than five applications, with some getting only one.

Experts have blamed poor planning and outdated curricula for the decline, noting that students are increasingly drawn to fields with better job prospects such as IT, law, and health sciences.

A university spokesperson said rising fees and limited career scope in traditional subjects have also contributed to the falling enrollment trend.

Education experts warned that without curriculum reforms and financial stability, more programmes across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may face closure in the coming years.
