KARACHI: US Consul General Charles Goodman visited Karachi Port, where Chairman Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed welcomed the visiting delegation.
During the visit, officials from KPT and the US delegation held detailed discussions on the maritime sector, port development and opportunities for expanding trade and economic cooperation.
Chairman KPT briefed the US delegation on plans to transform Karachi Port into an AI-enabled fifth-generation port. The delegation was also briefed on the vision of developing Karachi Port into a regional transit and transshipment hub.
The discussions covered measures to enhance port capacity, dredging, digitalisation and the introduction of smart port operations. Progress on green port development initiatives and proposed bunkering services was also reviewed.
Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed said that KPT and terminal operators had made significant investments in port infrastructure and operational capabilities. He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency and capacity of Karachi Port.
The delegation was also briefed on investment opportunities in the 140-acre Marine Business District, which is currently under development.
Officials discussed measures to increase Pakistani mango exports to the United States, including the establishment of phytosanitary treatment and storage facilities to facilitate exports and improve handling standards.
During the visit, the US delegation also reviewed ongoing infrastructure development and port operations at SAPTL, KGTL and KICT.
The visiting delegation appreciated the modernisation initiatives and development projects being undertaken at Karachi Port, as well as efforts to strengthen its infrastructure and operational capabilities.
