The Trump administration’s recent decision to temporarily halt visa appointments for international students has caused widespread concern across the globe. According to CBS, a leaked memo shows US embassies are pausing student visa issuances while intensifying checks on applicants’ social media profiles.
This move deepens the standoff between President Trump and major US universities, which he has accused of left-leaning bias and, in some cases, fostering “anti-Semitic behavior.”
The impact is massive: nearly 1.1 million international students, mainly from India (around 330,000), were enrolled in US institutions in the 2023–2024 academic year, according to Open Doors data.
As the US tightens access, experts predict students will increasingly explore alternatives like Canada, the UK, Australia, and Germany — all of which are actively seeking international talent.
The visa freeze not only threatens individual academic dreams but also risks reshaping global higher education flows.
