WhatsApp is working on a new privacy feature that will let users set up a PIN code linked to their username. This update, spotted in the latest beta version (2.25.17.48) for Android, aims to reduce spam and unwanted messages from unknown contacts.
Instead of sharing phone numbers, users will soon be able to create unique usernames. To add an extra layer of security, WhatsApp plans to allow users to set a PIN that others must enter before starting a new chat using the username.
Even if someone knows your username, they won’t be able to message you unless they also have your PIN. This makes it harder for random or suspicious accounts to send unwanted messages.
WhatsApp will also encourage users to enable the PIN feature by displaying a reminder banner in the Chats tab. This will be especially helpful for people who use simple or common usernames that are easier to guess.
While the feature is still in development, it shows WhatsApp’s growing focus on privacy and user control. The update is expected to roll out in a future version, and more details will be shared once available.
