Lahore High Court Orders Exhumation of Man’s Body for Postmortem Examination

LAHORE, August 7: The Lahore High Court has directed the exhumation of a 30-year-old man’s body to determine the cause of death, following a petition filed by the deceased’s father, Muhammad Yaqoob.

Justice Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan issued the order after reviewing details of the case, in which Yaqoob alleged that his son’s body was discovered on April 13 at the dera of one Abbas Gujar and buried without the mandatory postmortem or completion of legal formalities.

According to the petitioner, he approached the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kahna Police Station on April 17 seeking registration of a First Information Report (FIR) and permission to exhume the body. However, his initial request was denied by a judicial magistrate due to the absence of an FIR.

Subsequently, on July 12, 2025, an additional district and sessions judge overturned the magistrate’s ruling and ordered the exhumation. The opposing party challenged the decision, escalating the matter to the Lahore High Court.

During the hearing, Muhammad Yaqoob urged the court to uphold the exhumation order, arguing that a postmortem was essential to uncover the truth behind his son’s death. After examining the facts, Justice Khan granted permission for the exhumation and directed authorities to carry out a medical examination.

The court’s decision is seen as a critical step towards ensuring justice and transparency in the case.
