Chocolate Compound May Help Treat Bird and Swine Flu, Study Finds

A new study suggests that a compound found in chocolate, combined with another drug, may treat several types of flu, including bird and swine flu.

Published in PNAS, the research says theobromine (from chocolate) and a less-known compound called arenosine could be more effective than the common flu drug oseltamivir.

The treatment works by blocking a tiny channel the virus needs to grow and spread.

Tests on cells and animals showed the new combination outperformed oseltamivir.
