PUNJAB: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a Rs 21 billion drainage and sewerage system for Gujrat as part of long term flood relief and sanitation measures. She said machinery, manpower, and emergency resources from other cities have already been shifted to speed up the draining of floodwater.

Maryam Nawaz, who expressed satisfaction over the rapid decrease in water levels, said Fawara Chowk had already been cleared and that Gujrat’s situation was improving swiftly. “The water level has gone down by two feet in a single day, which is a major success. Soon, citizens will get full relief from this problem,” she assured.

The chief minister added that more WASA machinery and heavy equipment will reach Gujrat within the next two days to ensure round the clock drainage operations. She noted that drone technology was being used to identify blockages in water flow, while irrigation experts would devise future planning strategies.

She also announced the establishment of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) in Gujrat to provide permanent solutions to drainage, sewerage, and sanitation issues. Provincial secretaries of housing, local government, irrigation, and communication departments have been deployed in Gujrat to monitor emergency measures until the crisis subsides.

Maryam Nawaz emphasized that resources were being mobilized at full scale to secure Gujrat from any fresh rain or water surge. “We are working nonstop to restore normalcy in the city,” she said.
