LAHORE: Skygazers are in for a treat next week as the first Supermoon of 2025 is set to light up the night sky on October 7.

During this spectacular event, the Moon will swing closer to Earth than usual, appearing up to 14 percent larger and nearly 30 percent brighter than an average full moon. Astronomers note that the Moon will be just 224,599 miles away — the closest since November last year — making it a particularly eye-catching sight.

Unlike ordinary full moons, a Supermoon occurs when the Moon’s orbit brings it to its nearest point to Earth, creating a noticeably bigger and brighter glow. The phenomenon will be visible not only across Pakistan but also around the world, giving stargazers a chance to witness the celestial show without the need for telescopes or special equipment.

October’s Supermoon will be followed by two more in quick succession, on November 5 and December 5. Among them, the November event is expected to shine the brightest, with the Moon closing in to just 221,817 miles. A fourth Supermoon is also on the horizon for January 2026, though it will fall outside this year’s calendar.

Astronomy enthusiasts say the upcoming Supermoon won’t just be about numbers or distances — it’s about the experience. The glow of a giant Moon hanging low on the horizon often leaves onlookers mesmerized, turning an ordinary night into something truly memorable.
