KARACHI: A female teacher was dismissed from service by the Sindh Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Department after a video emerged showing her slapping and pulling the ear of a mentally-ill student at a school in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area.
The incident occurred on September 26, 2025, and prompted outrage after the footage went viral on social media. Following the incident, a case was filed on October 2, 2025, by a lawyer from the Sindh Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities under Section 2018 of the relevant law.
According to police, the accused teacher, Safia Naz, will be arrested soon. The school management confirmed in a statement that Safia Naz, who had been serving at the institution for the past eight years, was terminated immediately after the incident came to light.
In her statement, Safia Naz claimed that she reacted impulsively after the student bit her hand. The school administration added that the teacher had been under mental stress due to backache and illness, but emphasised that such behaviour was unacceptable.
Authorities from the Sindh Empowerment Department stated that disciplinary action had been completed and assured that steps would be taken to ensure the protection and well-being of students with disabilities in all educational institutions.
