The All-India Catholic Union (AICU) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to scrap the revival of the 1978 Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA), calling it a serious threat to religious freedom and personal liberty.
The law, dormant for decades, was revived after a Gauhati High Court order in 2024 directed the state to implement it within six months. The move, backed by some groups defending indigenous faiths, has faced sharp criticism from Christian organizations.
AICU said the Act violates constitutional rights and could disturb the peace and harmony that Arunachal Pradesh has long been known for.
