LAHORE: Air pollution continued to suffocate Punjab’s major cities on Sunday, with Faisalabad recording the worst air quality across the province, according to data from an environmental monitoring website.

Faisalabad’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached a staggering 528, placing it in the “hazardous” category  a level considered extremely dangerous for human health. Multan followed with an AQI of 432, while Lahore and Gujranwala recorded 358 and 357 respectively. Bahawalpur fared slightly better but still fell within the “very unhealthy” range at 212.

Environmental experts warn that such alarming AQI levels can cause serious respiratory and cardiovascular problems, especially among children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Thick smog has reduced visibility in several areas, disrupting daily activities and increasing health related complaints.

Authorities have urged citizens to limit outdoor exposure, wear protective masks, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak smog hours. Meanwhile, the Punjab government says efforts are underway to curb emissions from factories and vehicles  two major contributors to the worsening air quality.
