KARACHI: A 12-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a water tanker in Korangi’s 100 Quarters area on Wednesday.
Rescue officials said the incident occurred near Bengali Para, where the child, identified as Farhan, died on the spot after coming under the vehicle.
According to police, the tanker driver attempted to flee immediately after the accident but was stopped by local residents. Some members of the crowd also tried to set the tanker on fire before authorities intervened.
Police later arrested the driver and took the tanker into custody, confirming that legal proceedings have been initiated.
In his statement, the tanker driver claimed the boy had been riding a bicycle and fell before the rear wheels of the tanker ran over him. He insisted that the tanker did not directly hit the child, adding that traffic congestion in the market meant the vehicle was not moving at high speed. “Regardless of the situation, people always blame the driver of a heavy vehicle,” he said.
Rescue authorities reported that 807 people have lost their lives in various accidents across Karachi so far this year, of which 245 fatalities involved heavy vehicles such as buses, tankers and trucks.
