The National Institute of Health in the federal capital has confirmed a new case of wild polio virus type one in North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the NIH, the latest polio case is the fifth reported from North Waziristan in 2025, bringing the total number of polio cases reported nationwide to 31.
The laboratory report said the virus was detected in a four month old girl from Union Council Spin Wam 2 in North Waziristan.
Polio symptoms appeared in the child in December, after which samples taken confirmed the presence of wild poliovirus type one. This makes it the 31st polio case of 2025.
Last year, a total of 20 polio cases were reported in Pakistan, with 20 cases from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, nine from Sindh, and one case each from Punjab and Gilgit Baltistan.
