According to a new and encouraging study, aloe vera may turn out to be a hidden weapon in combating Alzheimer’s disease, also known as dementia and memory loss.
Researchers have discovered compounds in aloe vera that could help in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. It is important to note that Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia.
Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that affects human memory and is most common among people over the age of 65.
As the disease advances, memory problems become more severe and additional symptoms may appear, such as slower thinking and speech, as well as hallucinations or delusions.
So far, there is no effective cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but some medicines are available that can help reduce certain symptoms. These include cholinesterase inhibitors, which increase brain chemicals in mild to moderate stages of the disease.
In a new study, researchers found that beta sitosterol, a natural plant compound structurally similar to cholesterol, is naturally present in aloe vera and strongly interacts with two key enzymes associated with memory loss and cognitive decline.
These properties make this spongy green plant, aloe vera, a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Beta sitosterol is often found in higher concentrations in the gel of aloe vera leaves.
It is also present in dietary supplements made for skin health and general well being. Beta sitosterol is already used as a supplement to lower cholesterol and control symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
