PTI criticises Punjab govt over reported Rs11bn jet purchase

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has strongly criticised the Punjab government over reports that it has acquired a luxury business jet worth around $38–42 million (approximately Rs11 billion), allegedly for the exclusive use of the chief minister.

PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram termed the reported purchase a “glaring example of hypocrisy,” claiming that the government is preaching austerity while engaging in extravagant spending. According to media reports, the aircraft in question is said to be a high-end Gulfstream jet.

Waqas argued that such expenditure is unjustifiable at a time when the country is grappling with record inflation, rising unemployment and mounting economic pressures. He said nearly half of the population is struggling below the poverty line and questioned how public funds could be used for what he described as personal luxury.

Calling the alleged move reckless, the PTI leader maintained that it reflects a disconnect between the ruling authorities and the hardships faced by ordinary citizens. He warned that the public would demand accountability if national resources were misused for non-essential purposes.

Separately, Waqas voiced concern over the health of former prime minister Imran Khan, urging the government to grant his personal doctors immediate and unrestricted access to conduct medical examinations.

In a statement issued by the PTI Central Media Department, he said the matter transcends politics and is a question of transparency, human rights and public trust. He stressed that any uncertainty surrounding the health of a former premier who enjoys widespread public support is unacceptable.

The PTI spokesperson demanded that Khan’s physicians be allowed to carry out all necessary diagnostic procedures, including blood tests and specialised scans. If required, he said, the former premier should be permitted to visit a hospital or diagnostic facility of his choice.

Waqas maintained that the government has a responsibility to provide clear and verified information regarding Khan’s health and warned that further delays in ensuring transparency would not be acceptable.
