The National Institute of Health has issued an advisory for the prevention and control of dengue, informing the public about risks and precautionary measures.
Dengue remains a serious public health issue in Pakistan, with more than 33,000 confirmed cases reported across the country in 2025. In 2024, over 24,000 cases were recorded, while more than 21,000 cases were reported in 2023.
Experts say that mosquito breeding in clean and stagnant water is the main cause of dengue spread, particularly during the monsoon and post monsoon seasons when cases tend to rise.
Symptoms of dengue:
High fever, headache, body and joint pain, Nausea, vomiting, and skin rash Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding (warning signs)
Precautionary measures and treatment:
In case of symptoms, immediately shift the patient to a hospital. There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue; paracetamol should be used for fever and pain.
To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of water. For diagnosis, get NS1 antigen and PCR tests done in the early days.
The health department has urged the public to cover clean water storage and eliminate mosquito breeding sites to prevent the spread of dengue.
