After nearly 255 cases of the skin disease leishmaniasis were reported in Lower South Waziristan, a wave of concern has spread in remote and underdeveloped areas, while the increasing number of cases among children has particularly worried the local population.

‎According to District Health Officer Lower South Waziristan, Dr. Adnan Dawar, the health department is continuously monitoring the situation and treatment facilities are being provided in the affected areas. He stated that essential medicines, especially Glucantime injections, are available at District Headquarters Hospital Wana and other government health centers.

‎According to Dr. Adnan Dawar, from January 2026 to March 2026, the number of leishmaniasis cases was 66 in January, 94 in February, and 95 in March, bringing the total to 255 cases.

‎Residents have expressed serious concern over the rising cases, particularly among children, in the areas of Azam Warsak and Shaheen Panga in Tehsil Birmal. According to locals, the lack of basic healthcare facilities in rural areas creates difficulties in timely treatment for patients.

‎According to medical experts, leishmaniasis is a skin disease that spreads through the bite of a sandfly. Its various forms can cause skin lesions, affect internal organs, and damage the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose. The visceral form, also known as kala azar, can be fatal if not treated in time.

‎The health department stated that treatment is being provided free of cost at government hospitals, and injections are being administered only under medical supervision. Additionally, measures are being taken to provide mosquito nets, sprays, and other protective equipment.

‎The health department has urged the public to use mosquito nets at night, wear full-sleeved clothing, keep homes clean, and seek immediate medical examination in case of any skin wound to prevent the spread of the disease.

‎Local residents have demanded that the government take immediate emergency measures in the affected areas and improve healthcare facilities so that more people can be protected from the disease.
