ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Tajikistan have emphasized the importance of stronger regional cooperation to tackle shared environmental challenges, including climate change, glacial melting, water management, and wildlife conservation.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Musadik Masood Malik and Tajik Ambassador Yusuf Sharifzoda in Islamabad.

During the meeting, both sides discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in climate resilience, water resource management, wildlife protection, and regional connectivity.

The discussions also focused on the upcoming 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018–2028), scheduled to be held in Dushanbe, where Dr. Musadik Malik is expected to represent the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Ambassador Yusuf Sharifzoda highlighted that Pakistan and Tajikistan share similar geographical and environmental characteristics, noting that both countries host nearly 13,000 glaciers each. He said around 1,000 glaciers have already disappeared due to climate change and natural environmental impacts.

He stressed the urgent need for regional collaboration to address growing threats posed by glacial melt and changing climate patterns.

The ambassador also pointed out that several protected wildlife species — including markhor, snow leopards, ibex, and migratory birds — are found in both countries. He emphasized the need for joint conservation efforts through formal agreements and collaborative environmental initiatives.

Dr. Musadik Malik said climate, water, and energy are deeply interconnected issues and called for collective regional action to address environmental challenges effectively.

The minister expressed Pakistan’s interest in enhancing cooperation with Tajikistan in areas such as sustainable development, climate adaptation, water management, and wildlife conservation.

He also proposed the idea of establishing a regional corridor between Pakistan and Tajikistan aimed at strengthening climate cooperation, trade, and broader regional connectivity.

During the meeting, both sides also discussed future collaboration on weather pattern research and innovative solutions for improved climate and water management.

The two leaders reaffirmed the strong historical, cultural, and brotherly ties between Pakistan and Tajikistan and expressed commitment to further expanding bilateral cooperation.
