The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has summoned Noreen Niazi, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, to appear before its investigators on Monday. The summons follows allegations that she disseminated “false, offensive, and inflammatory” content across social media platforms.

Official documents confirm the agency’s cybercrime wing issued the notice under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). The agency alleges that Niazi’s recent online activity targeted state institutions, aiming to incite public unrest and undermine the reputation of key officials.

The summons lands at a time of heightened scrutiny regarding digital dissent in Pakistan. Since the events of May 9, 2023, the government has intensified its crackdown on social media accounts linked to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), accusing them of running coordinated campaigns to destabilize the current administration.

For the PTI, this move is another chapter in what they describe as a campaign of political victimization. Party leadership maintains that the government is utilizing the NCCIA to silence the families of opposition leaders, effectively weaponizing cyber laws to stifle criticism.

Niazi’s legal team has yet to confirm whether she will appear in person at the agency’s Islamabad headquarters. Failure to comply with a formal summons under PECA can lead to an arrest warrant, a reality that has left many in the party’s legal circle preparing for a potential standoff.

The agency’s notice marks a shift in how authorities are handling high-profile digital cases. By targeting immediate family members of the former premier, investigators are signaling that the boundary between political speech and prohibited digital conduct is being drawn with increasing severity.

Whether this summons leads to a formal charge sheet or serves as a tactical warning remains the central question for observers. With the legal system already strained by dozens of cases involving the former Prime Minister, this latest development ensures that the digital battlefield remains as volatile as the political one.
