Deep within the Zagros Mountains, roughly 20 kilometers north of Natanz, lies a facility known to intelligence agencies as “Pickaxe Mountain.” It isn’t a mountain in the traditional sense; it is a sprawling, hardened underground complex buried beneath hundreds of feet of solid rock.

Satellite imagery shows the site—officially designated as the Natanz enrichment facility’s expansion—is designed to withstand even the most powerful bunker-busting munitions in the U.S. arsenal.

Donald Trump’s recent rhetoric regarding potential strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure has thrust this specific site into the spotlight. Unlike the original Natanz facility, which sits closer to the surface, Pickaxe Mountain represents a generational shift in Iran’s defensive strategy. Its geography is its primary weapon.

The site is reportedly intended to house thousands of advanced IR-6 centrifuges. By moving enrichment deep underground, Tehran is aiming to remove the “military option” from the table entirely. Analysts suggest that conventional airstrikes—even those involving the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator—would struggle to reach the deepest chambers of the complex.

This creates a high-stakes calculation for Washington. If the U.S. were to target the facility, it would require a sustained, multi-day campaign rather than a surgical strike. Such an operation would likely trigger a massive, region-wide retaliatory response from Iran and its proxies, a reality that kept previous administrations from authorizing a direct assault.

The facility’s construction began in earnest around 2020, with tunnel entrances carved directly into the mountainside. Since then, the pace of excavation has accelerated, signaling to Western intelligence that Iran views this location as the crown jewel of its nuclear survival strategy.

“They aren’t just building a lab,” one regional security analyst noted. “They are building a fortress designed to outlive political shifts in Washington.”

Trump’s threats have refocused attention on whether the U.S. possesses the technological capability to neutralize a site hardened by both geography and deep-earth engineering. For now, Pickaxe Mountain remains the primary barrier between current diplomatic stalemates and an unpredictable escalation in the Middle East.
