The European Union has imposed a €1 billion fine on Google for alleged anti-competitive practices in the online advertising technology market, increasing pressure on the technology giant to change its business practices.

European regulators have accused Google of using its dominant position in the digital advertising sector to favour its own services and weaken competition. The case is part of the EU’s broader efforts to regulate the power of major technology companies and ensure fair competition in digital markets.

Google has reportedly entered into “constructive” discussions with EU authorities in an effort to address the concerns and avoid additional penalties. The company is seeking to demonstrate that it is willing to make changes to its advertising technology operations.

The European Commission has warned that failure to comply with regulatory requirements could lead to further enforcement action and additional financial penalties. The dispute highlights the growing conflict between major technology companies and regulators over market dominance, data and digital advertising.

The latest fine adds to the regulatory pressure facing Google in Europe, where authorities have increasingly taken action against large technology firms over alleged anti-competitive conduct.
