Instagram lets users swap audio on existing posts

Instagram is rolling out a “Replace Audio” feature, allowing users to swap the music on Reels they have already published. The update aims to give creators a second chance at trending audio without having to delete and repost their content.

The tool is accessible through the three-dot menu on individual Reels. Once a user selects “Replace Audio,” they can browse the platform’s music library and pick a new track. The app then automatically updates the video’s audio while keeping the original video footage intact.

This shift addresses a common frustration for creators who post a video only to find the audio has been muted due to copyright disputes or simply misses out on a song that starts trending hours later. By decoupling the video file from the audio track, Instagram is lowering the barrier to keeping content relevant.

There is a catch: the feature only applies to Reels. Standard photo posts or static video uploads aren’t included in this update. Furthermore, if a user has already edited their video to sync with the original track, swapping the audio might result in a disjointed experience where the visual cuts no longer match the beat.

The move signals Instagram’s continued push to prioritize Reels over static images as it competes with TikTok’s viral-first architecture. By making it easier to jump on trends post-facto, Meta is betting that users will keep their feeds updated more frequently rather than archiving or deleting underperforming posts.

The feature is currently rolling out globally. If you don’t see it yet, check the App Store or Play Store for the latest version of Instagram.
