Moderna shares climbed 8% in pre-market trading Tuesday after the company reported long-term success for its experimental mRNA melanoma vaccine. The data, presented at a major oncology conference, confirms the treatment—when paired with Merck’s Keytruda—significantly lowers the risk of death or recurrence in high-risk patients.

Three years after the initial treatment, patients receiving the combination therapy showed a 49% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death compared to those treated with Keytruda alone. For those whose cancer had already spread to lymph nodes, the results were even more pronounced.

The findings offer a critical lifeline for patients battling stage III or IV melanoma. Standard immunotherapy often fails to prevent the disease from returning, leaving patients with few options once the cancer begins to spread. Moderna’s approach, which essentially trains the immune system to hunt down specific cancer cells using the patient’s own genetic profile, is moving closer to a regulatory green light.

“We are seeing a durable benefit that holds up over time,” said a senior oncology researcher involved in the study. “This isn’t just about shrinking tumors; it’s about keeping the cancer from ever coming back.”

The partnership between Moderna and Merck has been a high-stakes gamble. By integrating mRNA technology—the same platform used for Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine—into personalized cancer care, the companies are betting on a shift in how oncology treats solid tumors. If the FDA grants accelerated approval based on these late-stage results, it would mark the first time a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine hits the commercial market.

Despite the optimism, manufacturing remains the primary hurdle. Each dose must be custom-made for the individual patient, requiring a complex, weeks-long process of sequencing a patient’s tumor and synthesizing the corresponding mRNA. Scaling this process to meet global demand without compromising quality is a challenge that has plagued personalized medicine for decades.

For investors, the stock surge signals renewed confidence in Moderna’s pipeline beyond respiratory viruses. The company has spent years trying to prove its mRNA platform works for diseases other than COVID-19. With this trial, they finally have the data to back the claim.

The companies expect to initiate additional trials for other types of cancer later this year. For now, the focus remains on finalizing the data package for regulators, potentially changing the standard of care for thousands of melanoma patients by 2025.
