Karachi residents bracing for a storm can stand down. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed today that the city will avoid heavy downpours this week, effectively ending speculation about a major weather system hitting the port city.

Forecasters are predicting only light rain or drizzle in isolated pockets of the metropolis. While clouds will remain a fixture over the skyline, the PMD’s latest advisory suggests the moisture levels aren’t sufficient to trigger the kind of urban flooding that typically paralyzes Karachi’s traffic.

The “so what” for the average commuter? The city’s aging drainage infrastructure won’t be put to the test this time around. Expect a drop in temperature, but don’t expect the roads to turn into rivers.

“The current atmospheric conditions over Sindh don’t favor heavy precipitation,” said a senior meteorologist at the Met Office. “We are looking at cloud cover and a cool breeze, but the intensity remains low.”

The PMD data shows that humidity levels are hovering in a range that supports light mist rather than sustained rain. Temperatures are expected to stay between 22°C and 28°C, offering a brief respite from the lingering heat of the past few weeks.

Despite the calm forecast, the provincial disaster management authorities remain on standby. It’s a standard protocol in a city where even a moderate shower can expose deep-seated systemic failures in power and sanitation. For now, however, the city’s emergency response teams are not mobilizing.

Clouds will likely clear by Thursday evening, giving way to the dry, breezy weather typical of the season. Karachiites can put away the umbrellas and focus on the cooling winds instead.
