A speeding truck struck a group of pedestrians near Jamali Bridge on the Super Highway early Tuesday morning, leaving two people dead and three others critically injured.

The victims were crossing the road when the driver lost control, veering into them before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing the scene. Rescue services arrived at the site shortly after, shifting the bodies and the injured to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Police officials confirmed the identities of the deceased, noting that the victims were laborers heading to work. The injured remain in critical condition, with doctors citing severe head trauma and multiple fractures.

Traffic flow on the busy artery slowed to a crawl as investigators cordoned off the area to collect evidence. Authorities have since impounded the truck, though the driver’s identity remains unconfirmed.

“We are tracking the vehicle’s registration and checking nearby CCTV footage to identify the suspect,” said a local police officer. “He won’t be hard to find; we have leads.”

Residents in the area have long complained about the lack of pedestrian crossings near Jamali Bridge, a notorious spot for heavy vehicle accidents. Despite repeated requests for traffic calming measures or a pedestrian bridge, the stretch remains a high-risk zone for those on foot.

The incident marks another grim addition to Karachi’s toll of road fatalities, where reckless driving and poor infrastructure continue to claim lives daily. For the families of the two victims, the morning commute ended in a tragedy that, according to local witnesses, was entirely preventable.
