Central Bank Holds Key Interest Rate at 11.5%

The central bank has opted to keep its policy rate steady at 11.5%, signaling a cautious approach as inflation remains a persistent drag on the economy. The decision, announced by the Monetary Policy Committee earlier today, keeps borrowing costs elevated despite mounting pressure from industrial sectors to provide relief.

Analysts had been split on the outcome. While some argued for a modest cut to stimulate stagnant growth, the bank’s leadership prioritized price stability. The committee maintained that current inflationary pressures—driven largely by energy costs and supply chain bottlenecks—require a restrictive stance for now.

For businesses, the news is a cold reality check. Companies struggling with high debt servicing costs will see no immediate reprieve. Manufacturers, already grappling with a slowdown in domestic demand, now face prolonged pressure on their margins. The message from the boardroom is clear: the era of cheap credit is not returning anytime soon.

The bank’s statement underscored a “data-dependent” approach. Officials pointed to the volatility in global commodity markets as a primary justification for staying the course. They aren’t willing to gamble on a rate cut while the consumer price index remains outside their comfort zone.

The decision arrives as consumer spending continues to falter. Retail data from the last quarter shows a sharp decline in discretionary purchases, yet the central bank appears more concerned with preventing a wage-price spiral than jump-starting consumer activity.

Critics of the hold argue that by keeping rates at 11.5%, the bank risks stifling a fragile recovery. “Waiting for perfect data is a luxury they don’t have,” said one senior economist at a local brokerage firm. He noted that the lag effect of previous hikes has already begun to bite, and further delay in easing could deepen the ongoing industrial contraction.

The committee will reconvene in six weeks. Until then, the cost of borrowing remains locked, leaving the private sector to navigate a high-interest environment with little room to maneuver.
