Have you ever noticed that one side of your nose feels blocked while the other side breathes normally? This is often caused by something called the nasal cycle.
The nasal cycle is a completely normal process where the tissues inside one nostril become slightly swollen while the other side opens more fully. Every few hours, the sides switch. Most people don’t notice this unless they have a cold, allergies, or sinus inflammation.
A blocked nostril can also be caused by allergies, infections, a deviated nasal septum, or dry air. Sleeping on one side may temporarily make congestion feel worse because of gravity.
If your nasal blockage lasts for several weeks, causes severe discomfort, or is accompanied by bleeding or facial pain, it’s best to seek medical advice. Otherwise, temporary one-sided congestion is usually a normal part of how your nose functions.
