Lahore: Punjab’s ambitious plan to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) education in government schools has been delayed after officials acknowledged that thousands of schools still lack the basic infrastructure needed to support digital learning. The rollout has stalled due to the absence of computer laboratories, unreliable electricity, poor internet connectivity, and limited technological resources in many schools, particularly in rural areas.

Government records indicate that a significant number of primary schools across the province do not have computer labs, while many students have little or no access to computers. Education experts say launching AI classes without addressing these shortcomings could widen the digital divide and leave many students unable to benefit from the programme.

Officials say the biggest challenge is funding. Equipping thousands of schools with computer labs, devices, reliable electricity, internet access, and maintenance services would require substantial investment. Authorities are now exploring alternative implementation strategies before moving ahead with the AI curriculum.

The Punjab government had earlier announced plans to introduce AI education to prepare students for future careers and modernize the education system. However, education analysts argue that improving basic school infrastructure must take priority before advanced subjects such as AI can be effectively taught across the province.
