KARACHI — A routine meeting at the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) headquarters in Bahadurabad spiraled into a violent confrontation Tuesday night, leaving party workers injured and the surrounding neighborhood in a state of alarm.

Trouble began when two rival factions within the party’s local organizational structure clashed over leadership grievances. What started as a heated verbal exchange quickly escalated, with plastic chairs flying across the room and a sudden burst of gunfire echoing through the streets.

The panic was immediate. Local residents scrambled for cover as the sound of aerial firing signaled the end of the meeting. Police arrived on the scene within minutes, though the instigators had already melted into the dense traffic of the Bahadurabad area.

“It wasn’t just a disagreement; it was a total breakdown of discipline,” said a senior party member who requested anonymity to discuss internal rifts. “People were throwing furniture, and then someone pulled a weapon. It’s a dark day for the organization.”

The incident highlights the deepening instability within MQM-P, a party that has struggled to maintain a unified front since its 2018 splintering. While senior leadership has called for calm, the violence suggests that the grassroots friction is no longer contained to closed-door sessions.

Police officials recovered spent shell casings from the site, confirming that multiple shots were fired. No fatalities were reported, but the local trauma center treated three individuals for blunt-force injuries sustained during the chair-throwing brawl.

For the residents of Bahadurabad, the clash is a grim reminder of a political culture that has historically leaned on intimidation. As the police investigation begins, the party’s leadership faces a mounting challenge: controlling a base that is increasingly willing to settle political scores on the street rather than at the ballot box.
