A shopping center in Noto, Ishikawa, became the unlikely center of a rescue operation this week after a powerful earthquake left 25 cats trapped inside the debris. Local authorities confirmed late Wednesday that every animal was recovered alive, ending a tense standoff between rescuers and the unstable structure.

The cats were residents of a specialized pet café located within the mall. When the tremors hit, the building suffered significant structural damage, forcing an immediate evacuation of human staff. The animals, however, remained caught behind barricaded doors and shifted masonry.

For the owners, the relief was palpable. “I didn’t think we’d get them all out,” said the café manager, who watched from the perimeter as search teams navigated the shattered storefront. “Seeing them safe is the only thing that matters right now.”

Rescue teams faced a narrow window to act. Aftershocks continued to rattle the region, making every entry into the mall a gamble. They used thermal cameras and acoustic sensors to pinpoint the cats’ locations beneath the rubble, eventually clearing a path through a service entrance that had remained partially intact.

The Noto region has been reeling since the initial seismic event, with thousands displaced and infrastructure severely compromised. While the loss of human life and property remains the primary focus of the regional government’s emergency response, the successful recovery of the cats provided a rare moment of morale for the local community.

All 25 animals are currently under veterinary observation at a temporary shelter. While several suffered from mild dehydration and minor scrapes, officials confirmed none sustained life-threatening injuries.

They will remain in medical care until their owners can secure stable housing in the area. For now, the successful extraction stands as a small but significant victory in a region still struggling to find its footing.
