Nicole Llewellyn doesn’t carry a stethoscope to check for heartbeats. She carries a magnifying glass, a vial of syrup, and a specialized kit designed to spot parasites that can wipe out an entire colony in weeks. As a veterinarian specializing in honeybees, Llewellyn represents a quiet, necessary shift in how we manage one of the world’s most critical pollinators.

For decades, beekeeping was a hobbyist’s pursuit or a rural trade managed by trial and error. When a hive died, the keeper usually just bought another. Today, with colony collapse disorder and pesticide exposure pushing bee populations to the brink, that approach is failing. Llewellyn is part of a growing, albeit small, cohort of “bee vets” now making house calls to commercial and backyard apiaries alike.

The economics of the job are simple: one healthy hive can pollinate acres of crops and produce hundreds of dollars in honey. A sick one is a liability. “People think of bees as a collective,” Llewellyn says. “But when you’re looking at a box of 50,000, you’re looking at a complex biological system that needs clinical intervention, not just guesswork.”

Her work focuses heavily on *Varroa destructor*—the parasitic mite that has become the primary killer of honeybees globally. While most beekeepers treat for mites with off-the-shelf chemicals, they often miss the timing or dosage. Llewellyn treats the hive like a hospital ward, conducting diagnostic tests to determine resistance levels before prescribing a treatment plan. It’s precision medicine applied to an insect.

The shift toward veterinary oversight is also being driven by new federal regulations. In many regions, the FDA has tightened rules on the use of antibiotics in bees, requiring a veterinarian’s prescription for drugs that were once available over the counter. This regulatory shift has forced a change in the beekeeping industry, moving it from a “do-it-yourself” culture toward a more formal, scientific framework.

Critics argue that the cost of hiring a veterinarian makes the practice inaccessible for the average hobbyist. A single site visit can run hundreds of dollars, a steep price for someone keeping only two or three hives in their backyard. Yet, as the ecological cost of bee loss rises, the argument for professional oversight is gaining traction.

The future of the honeybee may not depend on a single, magical scientific breakthrough. Instead, it’s looking more like a slow, deliberate transition to better medicine. We are finally treating the bee as an animal that matters, and for the first time in a century, the hives have a doctor on call.
