A 36-year-old man is in custody, accused of sparking the Pioneer Fire — the massive blaze that has consumed over 38,000 acres of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.

Douglas Knight of Renton, Washington, was arrested Tuesday. Federal investigators allege Knight ignited the fire on June 8 near the Lake Chelan shoreline. The blaze quickly surged into a sprawling inferno, forcing evacuations and closing vast swaths of the wilderness area throughout the summer.

The arrest follows a months-long investigation by the U.S. Forest Service. Authorities have remained tight-lipped regarding the specific evidence that led to Knight, but court documents indicate the investigation focused on a campfire left unattended in a restricted zone.

For the residents of Chelan County, the news brings a measure of relief tempered by frustration. The Pioneer Fire didn’t just burn timber; it crippled local tourism during the peak summer months. Small businesses along the lake reported significant revenue losses as smoke choked the valley and hiking trails remained shuttered under federal emergency orders.

“We watched the smoke rise for weeks, wondering if our livelihoods would survive the season,” said one local business owner who asked to remain anonymous. “Knowing it wasn’t a freak lightning strike, but a human choice, changes how we look at the blackened hillsides.”

Federal prosecutors charged Knight with one count of setting timber afire. If convicted, he faces up to five years in federal prison and substantial fines aimed at covering a fraction of the millions spent on suppression efforts.

The Pioneer Fire remains one of the most stubborn blazes in recent state history. Rugged, vertical terrain made it nearly impossible for ground crews to reach the fire’s edge, forcing commanders to rely on aerial water drops and containment lines that spanned miles of remote ridgelines.

While the fire is no longer an active threat to communities, the investigation into the full extent of the damage continues. Knight is scheduled for an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Seattle later this week.

For now, the charred landscape surrounding Lake Chelan serves as a stark reminder of the cost of one man’s alleged negligence. The recovery of the forest floor will take years; the bill for the taxpayers will be tallied for months to come.
