Health: Vaping among young people continues to raise health concerns as experts warn that electronic cigarettes are not harmless alternatives and may expose teenagers to nicotine and other substances that can affect their developing bodies.

Vaping devices heat a liquid to produce an aerosol that users inhale. Many products contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance. Because some devices are packaged in attractive designs and available in a wide range of flavours, health experts remain concerned that vaping can appear less harmful or more socially acceptable to young people.

One of the major concerns is nicotine addiction. Adolescents can become dependent on nicotine, making it difficult to stop using vaping products once the habit develops. Nicotine exposure during adolescence is also a concern because the brain continues developing during these years.

Vaping can also affect the respiratory system. The aerosol produced by e-cigarettes is not simply harmless water vapour. Depending on the product, it may contain nicotine, flavouring chemicals, ultrafine particles and other substances that can irritate the lungs.

Health professionals are particularly concerned about young people who begin vaping without previously smoking cigarettes. What may start as occasional experimentation can develop into regular nicotine use.

Another concern is the possibility that vaping can increase the likelihood of later tobacco use. Researchers and public-health experts have continued to study the relationship between youth vaping and conventional cigarette smoking.

The risks are not limited to the lungs. Nicotine can affect heart rate and blood pressure, while dependence can also contribute to cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Young users may experience irritability, difficulty concentrating or strong urges to vape when they attempt to stop.

The growing popularity of vaping has therefore created a challenge for parents, schools and health authorities. Experts say prevention should focus on helping young people understand what vaping products actually contain rather than allowing attractive packaging or marketing to create the impression that they are risk-free.

Parents and teachers can also play an important role by discussing vaping openly with teenagers. Warning signs may include frequent requests for money, unusual devices or accessories, changes in behaviour and a strong need to use vaping products regularly.

Health experts emphasize that young people who are already dependent on nicotine should receive supportive guidance rather than simply being blamed or punished. Professional advice can help teenagers understand nicotine dependence and develop strategies to quit.

As vaping products continue to evolve, researchers are also studying their longer-term effects. The full consequences of prolonged exposure may take years to become clear, making prevention particularly important for adolescents.

The central message from health professionals is straightforward: vaping is not risk-free, and young people should not assume that an electronic cigarette is harmless simply because it does not produce traditional cigarette smoke.
