Two people are dead, and hundreds have been forced from their homes as out-of-control wildfires tear across the Greek island of Chios. The infernos, fueled by gale-force winds and dangerously dry conditions, have turned the landscape into a frontline for emergency crews struggling to contain the spread.

Local authorities confirmed the fatalities late Wednesday. The victims, both men, reportedly died while attempting to assist in firefighting efforts near the village of Metochi. Their deaths underscore the volatility of a fire season that has arrived earlier and fiercer than expected for the Mediterranean region.

The fires ignited in separate locations, quickly merging into a singular, fast-moving wall of flame. By midday, smoke had blanketed the island, prompting an emergency evacuation order for the settlements of Metochi and Sidirounta. Residents fled with little more than the clothes on their backs as the fire moved toward populated zones.

Firefighting units are currently stretched to their limits. More than 100 firefighters, bolstered by water-dropping aircraft and specialized volunteer brigades, are battling the blaze in rugged, inaccessible terrain. The winds, gusting at speeds that make aerial support hazardous, have pushed the flames toward coastal areas, complicating the evacuation of tourists and locals alike.

The Greek Climate Crisis Ministry has kept the island on high alert. With temperatures hitting 38°C (100°F) and humidity levels plummeting, the island’s vegetation has become prime fuel. Experts have pointed to a record-breaking winter drought as the primary culprit for the intensity of these early-season fires, noting that the soil moisture is at its lowest point in over a decade.

This is the second major fire incident in the region this month, signaling a grueling summer ahead for Greece’s emergency services. Last year, similar fires displaced thousands and caused millions in damages, forcing the government to overhaul its national wildfire response strategy.

As the sun sets over Chios, crews are preparing for a long night. They know the winds may shift, and the fires—currently burning through pine forests and olive groves—show no sign of relenting before dawn. For the residents of Metochi, the wait for news on their homes and the containment of the blaze is far from over.
