ISLAMABAD — The federal government’s offer for political dialogue with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) remains on the table, according to senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.

Chaudhry, speaking to reporters in Islamabad, insisted that the government is prepared to engage in talks to stabilize the current political climate. He frames the invitation as a gesture of parliamentary maturity, though he stopped short of detailing any specific agenda or timeframe for such negotiations.

The offer arrives at a time when the PTI remains locked in a standoff with the ruling coalition, marked by ongoing protests and persistent claims regarding the legitimacy of the February 8 general elections. For the PML-N, the dialogue is a mechanism to lower the temperature; for the PTI, it’s a gamble that risks alienating its core base if it appears to be seeking a back-channel deal with the establishment.

“The doors for discussion aren’t locked,” Chaudhry said, emphasizing that the government prefers a negotiated path over continued street agitation. He didn’t offer a concession regarding the PTI’s primary demands—most notably the release of jailed party founder Imran Khan—leaving the fundamental impasse untouched.

Previous attempts at formalizing a dialogue have repeatedly collapsed. Both sides have accused the other of acting in bad faith, with the PTI frequently labeling the administration “illegitimate” and the government dismissing the opposition’s protests as attempts to destabilize the economy.

Observers remain skeptical about the sincerity of these overtures. With the PTI leadership currently navigating a complex legal landscape and the government focused on securing a long-term IMF bailout, neither side appears willing to compromise on their core political leverage.

Chaudhry’s comments signal that while the government wants the appearance of a functioning democracy, it isn’t ready to pay the political price the opposition is demanding. Whether this invitation leads to a breakthrough or remains a standard talking point for the Sunday news cycle depends entirely on whether either side is willing to blink first.
