A Pakistan Rangers official was killed and another sustained injuries after unidentified armed men opened fire on their vehicle in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) earlier today.
The attack occurred in a remote area near the Line of Control. The Rangers team was conducting a routine patrol when the ambush began, leaving the officials little time to return fire before the assailants fled into the rugged terrain.
The fallen soldier died on the spot. His colleague, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, was stabilized at a local field clinic before being airlifted to a military medical facility in Rawalpindi. Doctors describe his condition as critical.
Security forces have cordoned off the entire sector. A search operation is underway, with heavy contingents of the army and local police combing the surrounding forests and mountain passes. Intelligence agencies are currently reviewing communication intercepts to determine if the attack was a localized criminal act or a coordinated cross-border provocation.
Tensions along the AJK border have remained volatile for months. While the 2021 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan significantly reduced heavy artillery exchanges, small-scale skirmishes and militant activity persist in the region’s dense, porous border zones.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. Local authorities remain on high alert, anticipating further attempts to destabilize the region as security agencies tighten their grip on the search perimeter.
