The federal government cut the price of petrol by Rs1.86 per liter late Sunday, providing a marginal but welcome relief to consumers struggling with persistent inflation.

The Finance Division issued the official notification shortly before midnight. The new rates took effect at 12:00 AM Monday. High-speed diesel (HSD) also saw a reduction, dropping by Rs3.32 per liter.

This marks the second consecutive downward revision in fuel costs, driven primarily by a cooling trend in international oil markets. Global benchmark crude prices have softened over the past fortnight, easing the pressure on Pakistan’s import bill.

For the average motorist, the change is modest. A full tank in a standard sedan might save the price of a cup of tea, but the psychological impact of a downward trend matters more to a public weary of steady hikes.

The decision comes as the coalition government attempts to stabilize a volatile economy under the watchful eye of the International Monetary Fund. Analysts suggest that while the current reduction is tied to global market fluctuations, the government’s fiscal space remains razor-thin. Any significant deviation in global supply chains could force a reversal when the next review cycle begins in two weeks.

Despite the dip, transport costs for essential goods remain high, keeping the pressure on the prices of food and daily commodities. Critics argue that until the government addresses structural inefficiencies in the energy sector—specifically the circular debt pileup—these small, bi-weekly price adjustments will do little to alter the broader cost-of-living crisis.

The oil industry expects prices to remain range-bound in the coming weeks, provided the Middle East security situation does not trigger another supply shock. For now, the pumps have updated their boards, and for at least the next fourteen days, the cost of the commute is slightly lower.
