AMSTERDAM — The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has fired a direct shot at Gianni Infantino, publicly declaring that the FIFA president must step down by 2027. The move marks a rare, high-profile rebellion from a major European federation against the current FIFA hierarchy.

The KNVB’s stance centers on a demand for a fundamental reset of football’s global governing body. Dutch football officials argue that Infantino’s tenure has been defined by a lack of transparency and a focus on expansion that prioritizes revenue over the sport’s core integrity.

“We believe it is time for a change,” a spokesperson for the KNVB said during a briefing on Tuesday. The federation is now actively lobbying other European bodies to join the push for new leadership, framing the 2027 window as a non-negotiable deadline for a transition.

For years, Infantino has tightened his grip on FIFA through a combination of expanded tournaments—like the bloated 48-team World Cup—and strategic alliances with federations outside of Europe. Critics have long accused him of stifling internal dissent, but the Dutch intervention suggests the political landscape is shifting.

The KNVB isn’t just targeting the presidency; they are pushing for a broader structural overhaul. They want changes to how FIFA allocates host nation rights and a more rigorous vetting process for executive committee members.

FIFA has yet to offer a detailed rebuttal, opting instead for a brief statement emphasizing “unity” and “the growth of the game under current leadership.” Infantino, who was re-elected unopposed in 2023, has previously signaled his intent to remain in the role well beyond 2027, citing his mandate from the broader FIFA membership.

The challenge for the Dutch is simple: Europe holds the power, but it rarely acts in lockstep. Whether the KNVB can translate this public ultimatum into a genuine movement remains the central question. If other influential nations like Germany or England remain on the sidelines, the Dutch demand will likely be dismissed as little more than a symbolic gesture.

For now, the pressure is on. The KNVB has made its move, and in the opaque world of FIFA politics, even a small crack in the foundation can lead to an inevitable collapse.
