A makeshift firecracker factory exploded in a residential neighborhood in India’s Bihar state on Tuesday, killing eight children who were reportedly working inside the premises. The blast, which leveled the structure, has once again exposed the grim reality of hazardous child labor in the country’s unregulated manufacturing sector.

The incident occurred in the Bhagalpur district. Police arrived to find the site reduced to rubble, with emergency responders pulling bodies from the debris throughout the afternoon. Local authorities confirmed the victims were all minors, though they have yet to release a full list of names as families gather at the local hospital in shock.

“The building was being used as a storage and manufacturing unit for firecrackers without any valid safety clearances,” said a senior district official on the condition of anonymity. “We are investigating how such a dangerous operation was allowed to function in a densely populated area.”

Under Indian law, the manufacture of firecrackers requires stringent licensing, fire safety inspections, and strict adherence to location zoning. Despite these mandates, small-scale, illegal units often operate in rural or residential pockets to bypass taxes and safety oversight.

For the victims’ families, the tragedy is compounded by the exploitation that led to it. Child labor remains a persistent issue in India’s informal economy, where minors are frequently employed for low wages in high-risk environments like brick kilns, garment sweatshops, and firecracker units. Safety equipment is rarely provided, and emergency exits are almost non-existent.

Local police have registered a case against the building owner, who fled the scene immediately after the explosion. A forensic team is currently scouring the site for chemical residues to determine if the firecrackers were being produced with banned, high-grade explosives.

While state officials have promised compensation for the affected families, the incident has sparked local protests. Residents are demanding a crackdown on the dozens of other unlicensed workshops operating in the district, fearing that without immediate intervention, this explosion is merely a precursor to the next.
