How Trump Has Disrupted National Parks

The federal government manages 429 national park sites, but the philosophy governing them shifted sharply during Donald Trump’s administration. His approach prioritized “energy dominance” and expanded commercial access, often putting the National Park Service (NPS) at odds with conservation groups and career scientists.

The friction became public early. Within months of taking office, the administration pushed to open millions of acres of public land to oil and gas leasing. While national parks themselves are legally protected from drilling, the buffer zones and surrounding landscapes—often critical corridors for wildlife—faced new pressure. Former Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke moved to streamline permitting, a policy that industry advocates cheered as a win for the economy but which environmentalists argued threatened the ecological integrity of parks like Zion and the Grand Canyon.

Then came the maintenance backlog. By 2020, the NPS faced an $11.9 billion repair deficit. Trump championed the Great American Outdoors Act, a bipartisan bill that secured billions in permanent funding for park maintenance. It was a rare point of consensus. Yet, critics note the funding came with a trade-off: the administration simultaneously pushed to increase entrance fees and privatize services within the parks, effectively shifting the financial burden from the treasury to the individual visitor.

The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated the narrative. As states locked down, the administration leaned on parks to remain open to provide “an escape.” However, the lack of a unified health strategy left park superintendents scrambling to manage overcrowding without adequate staff or PPE. In some instances, the focus on keeping gates open took precedence over the safety of the seasonal workforce, leading to internal friction that lasted long after the tourist season ended.

Beyond the numbers, the administration’s rhetoric regarding “environmental red tape” fundamentally altered the relationship between the White House and the NPS. Career officials found their reports on climate change—specifically regarding rising sea levels in coastal parks like the Everglades—frequently sidelined or buried in internal reviews. The message was clear: the parks were to be managed as assets for current use, not necessarily as bastions of long-term environmental research.

Today, the impact remains visible. The infrastructure projects funded by the 2020 act are still ongoing, yet the debate over how much commercial activity belongs inside protected borders hasn’t faded. For many, the Trump years proved that the national parks are not just scenic backdrops; they are high-stakes political terrain where the definition of “public land” remains a moving target.

Whether these policies ultimately strengthened the park system or compromised its conservation mandate depends on who you ask—but the era left the National Park Service leaner, more commercialized, and permanently changed.
